Outings Report May 2026
Unfortunately, we had to cancel our outing to Bletchley Park. The person leading this injured himself and, as Andrea and I were in Thailand at the time of the outing, we didn’t have anyone available to lead it
November 2025
On Thursday 27th November, a group went by coach to visit the BATH CHRISTMAS MARKET. This market features hundreds of twinkling chalets entwining some of the city's most iconic monuments, a plethora of food and beverage stalls, and light displays that transport you to another world. There are stalls showcasing artisan jewellers, cheesemongers, homeware and more, so it's the ideal place to find some perfect Christmas gifts.

In conjunction with the Natural History Group
Our November outing was a group coach trip to Batsford Arboretum, near Morton in Marsh. We were given an interesting guided tour by the head gardener who pointed out some of the more spectacular autumn colours as well as some of the more weird and wonderful trees. After taking lunch in the cafe there was plenty of time to wander round again at our leisure and visit the shop and small garden centre. All in all a great day out.

JANUARY 2025
A trip to the Imperial War Museum and Borough Market
The day greeted us with sunshine and although a cold day, it was a lot warmer than it had been. The journey to London hit the usual traffic on the M25, however, we arrived almost on time. The Imperial War Museum did not disappoint. Starting with the huge missile launchers rescued from a scrap yard and now standing outside of the entrance to the museum to the grand atrium, which holds tanks, aircraft, and a towering V-2 rocket. After a quick coffee in the café, we set off to explore the World War I and II galleries which were particularly moving, with personal letters, artifacts, and interactive displays that brought history to life. The Holocaust Exhibition was a sombre, yet essential reminder of humanity's past, leaving a lasting impact.

A quick trip on the coach brought us to Borough Market which was a complete contrast to the sobriety of the museum and a feast for the senses!! The bustling atmosphere, tantalizing aromas, and colourful stalls from artisanal cheeses, freshly baked bread and doughnuts (my downfall!) fresh fish and oysters, spices, olives and much more. There were also the numerous street food stalls as well as restaurants offering every type of cuisine you could ever imagine!! You would not go hungry!

The beautiful Southwark Cathedral was also worth a visit as was the Golden Hind.
A fairly easy trip home on the coach ended a perfect day and a thank you to Andrea De Jongh our organiser for the day!
WINCHESTER CHRISTMAS MARKET - Tuesday 26th November 2024
Our trip to Winchester was a wonderful day enhanced by sunshine!. Winchester is an historic city renowned for its medieval streets, wonderful architecture and rich heritage. On arrival we were greeted at the entrance to the town by the statue of King Alfred. Its cobbled streets are adorned with twinkling lights, leading to boutique shops and historic pubs.

The entrance to the Christmas Market is set against the cathedral's dramatic backdrop which has Gothic architecture and with over 900 years of history. The first stall that greets you is an amazing mulled wine stall made of gold with a man stirring a huge vat of mulled wine hard to resist! The market is ranked among Europe’s best, and features over 100 chalets offering unique crafts, festive foods, and handmade gifts. A delightful day and certainly worth a visit!
