Chinnor & District

International Studies Information Group

I would like to set one up, based on one I used to run when I lived in Sussex as part of the Steyning and District u3a (you can look it up on their website, it's still going) Steyning And District U3a International Studies .

The idea is to build an understanding of the world in which we live.  I am a fellow learner, not an expert, but am happy to organise and chair discussions.  These will be based on a current focus book, which is read in depth over some months, one or more chapters a month depending on length and complexity. We will generally alternate between books on one country and books on global and international issues. The price per book would usually be between £7 and £20.  You do need to have read the current chapter(s) and be prepared to participate in analysis and discussion, and if willing to take turns at leading. We can meet in each other's houses (if room), happy to start in mine.  A discussion group works best at no more than 12 people, and at first we are looking for a group of up to 10 to help fit into members houses.

My previous group had a good mix of people with different ideas and opinions and levels of knowledge, which is welcome, please come prepared to listen and respond with courtesy, challenging if you wish. Some of you may have lived and worked abroad, have knowledge from other sources or like me just want to learn and understand more in these challenging times.

The book I have in mind is Peace, a very short introduction, by Oliver Richmond but if you have one you'd rather read and discuss (provided it's affordable for fellow members) then happy to hear about it.  We will be meeting on the 1st Wednesday of the month, starting on 5 March, though if we can sort out a preliminary get together during February that would be good, so we can all get copies of the book the group chooses and read the first bit before the meeting."
