Although the ethos of the u3a is that SIGs should be self-funding, it is recognised that sometimes some additional financial support is required to establish a new group (e.g. pay for room booking for an inaugural meeting) or to augment the funds of an established group (e.g. to pay for an occasional specialist speaker or replace equipment).  Therefore, it is possible to apply for financial support.
