3rd Friday in Reading Room
Venue: The Reading Room

Meeting on the 3rd Friday of the month at The Reading Room in the High Street we have learned this year of Prime Ministers in wartime, the secrets of Hughenden Manor in wartime, and all this in the 80th year of VE Day. In June we continued in the same vein with a presentation on the role of the Home Guard.

To be sure not to be too single-minded, May 2025 brought us the truth behind "The Birth of the Ashmolean…”. We might have thought that we knew where it is, but did we know why it is, where it is? A story involving gardeners, and Kings; and the intrigue and creation of Britain’s first “…modern museum”.

If you are looking for something a little lighter, then you might have enjoyed October when we were given an insight into the coming and growth of Rock ‘n Roll. Sadly, we had no license for dancing.

So, not dates by rote; not Kings and Queens without understanding, but a varied programme which will appeal to all tastes and interests.

If you have an interest, academic or informative, then you would be most welcome to our meetings. Lots to learn and time to digest with tea and biscuits assured after every presentation. No need to pre-book, just turn up on the 3rd Friday of the month at The Reading Room in the High Street.

The fascination of the subject of History, for many, is that there is plenty of it to keep our programme varied, interesting and, usually, enjoyable.
