JANUARY 2026
Jean’s legendary January Oxford walk, starting in the city centre, took in several green spaces on the route to Iffley’s magnificent Romanesque church. The route back to St Aldates took us along the towpath opposite the colleges’ rowing clubs. A larger than usual group of 31 people enjoyed the usual banter on one of the few sunny days of the month.

Walk leaders are needed from June onwards. Routes should be 5 – 6 miles, a couple of hills are acceptable and parking facilities are crucial, albeit that we car share for maximum effect.
Please contact Frances at chu3amediumwalks@gmail.com for further details.

Here we are, as the observant amongst you will know, in Haddenham. Des gave us a tour of the many settlements in the village, his knowledge of the local history illuminating. From here, we took footpaths and field crossings to Thame where we caught a bus back to the start. Many thanks to Des and the authorities who provide us with free local travel.

Tuesday 16th September
Peter H led us on a beautiful sunny morning from the historic village of Hurley for our September walk. We enjoyed wonderful views of the Thames Valley, continuing through mixed woodland to return along the bank of the River Thames. Peter did a little sheep herding as a couple of the flock had worked out how to get through the gate! We clocked about 5 and a half miles, had a lot of fun and came home feeling uplifted by the experience.

Peter and his Penn Pals !!
Tuesday 15th July.
We met at 09:45 for prompt 10:00 start
Sandy & Sue had checked out the walk from Mapledurham village, 2 miles off the A4074 Oxford to Reading Road. RG4 7TP, Map Ref: OS171 767 670. We avoided the main access through Watlington (Shirburn Road) as it remains closed until August.
Nearer to Mapledurham, we took the turning opposite the Packsaddle pub, single track with passing places. We parked at the church for a small donation. The walk followed bridleways and paths across fields and through woods. There were 2 hills and one was steep so there were lots of rehydration stops. Fortunately, there was plenty of shade and no stiles. The last hill opened up to a splendid view of the Thames before we headed back down.

Tuesday 18th June 2025
Our June walk started from All Saints, Rotherfield Peppard from where we took woodland tracks and grassland paths to Crowsley Park. The 18th century Grade II listed, privately owned mansion sits in its own ground. Since WW2 the park has been the site of a signals receiving station and remains an outstation of the BBC's Monitoring HQ. We returned along similar terrain having covered 5 miles.

Tuesday 20th May 2025
Length: 5 miles, meet at 09:45 to start sharp at 10:00
Start: Bradenham, Rectory Lane NT car park. HP14 4HFTurn left at the Red Lion into Bradenham Wood Lane, after 50 yds, right into Rectory Lane. Follow the track uphill to the left to reach the car park overlooking the cricket green.
Karin led us along woodland paths, 3 fairly steep inclines and one steep downhill. No stiles. The church had coffee afterwards and the Red Lion did lunch/cake.
The usual advice to car share please and bring ICE details Please advise chu3amediumwalks@gmail.com or preferably, keep informed on the Medium Walks WhatsApp group.

Tuesday 15th April 2025

April's walk was led by Thelma from Prestwood for 5'ish miles along good paths and through beautiful woodlands enhanced by wonderful displays of bluebells. The weather held up and it was great to enjoy the company of those who attended.
Tuesday 18th March 2025
Nettie, who had helped Simon prepare the walk, was amongst the 26 of us whose enjoyment of the countryside was intensified by a cloudless blue sky, bright sunlight reflected in shimmering leaves. The final stretch of the walk took us through an alpaca farm, very cute! The end provided an opportunity for a cuppa at the Peterley Manor Farm Café to finish what was considered by all to be a lovely walk. Many thanks to Simon and his worthy assistant.

Starting point: Peterley Manor Farm HP16 0HH
From the farm, Simon led a 5.5 mile walk perambulating though typical Chilterns countryside, farmland and woodland trails. Visiting Missenden Abbey, we passed the home of Roald Dahl and were treated to some interesting facts about his life and literary contributions. Although remembered primarily for his children’s literature and short stories, he was a WWII fighter pilot, rising to the rank of wing commander and subsequently served as an intelligence officer .............
........... Born in Wales to Norwegian parents, before the war Dahl worked for the Shell Petroleum company in Kenya and Dar es Salaam. His literary work included writing macabre adult stories that often blended humour and innocence with surprising plot twists broadcast on TV.
Dahl’s marriage to the actress Patricia Neal produced 5 children. The eldest, Olivia, tragically died of measles aged 7. His second marriage to Felicity (Liccy) continued until his death.
Tuesday, 28th February 2025

Our February walk was on Tuesday, 28th February. Starting at Checkendon, free car park opposite the school RG8 0SR, Explorer 171, SU659818. Approximately 5 miles stile free, good surfaces along country lanes and across farmland, inevitably some mud. One short, steep climb to views across the Oxfordshire Plain. A hidden gem of a sculpture park at the end on return to St Peter & Paul church. The route was cunningly adjusted to avoid potential hazards.
New members are very welcome to join a friendly bunch who meet on the 3rd Tuesday of the month at 10.00 back by lunchtime. The circular walks average 5-6 miles and are led by group members stopping regularly along the way to take a sip of water, admire the view or to get our breath back! We take a break halfway to have a small snack. Each walk will indicate the level of difficulty, length of the walk and whether there are hills or stiles. Walk with us to stretch your legs and enjoy the socialising. Please contact me for further details: chu3amediumwalks@gmail.com
